A travel through a McCarthy first editions collection

Vanity Affair, here are the photos of Augusta Britt with Cormac

A few days ago, just after Vanity Fair published the article about the love affair between Cormac McCarthy and Augusta Britt, the book dealer and researcher Scott Brown, complained that no photos of them together were provided to support the story. Here are two of them.

Despite there being no absolute certainty about the identification, there is a very strong chance that the blonde girl is Augusta. The second photo was apparently taken in Ciudad Juarez, and the other woman is a friend of McCarthy named Barbara who is the original source of the photos.. Reportedly, Barbara met Cormac either when they lived in Knoxville, or in Nashville. She became a close friend of Cormac and they traveled together or met up in locations around the country.

The photos appeared for the first time some time ago on the web market when Barbara’s grand-daughter’s husband offered them for sale along with an unsigned first edition of Blood Meridian. The book and the photo were then acquired by the collector Nate Cooley. Another print of the second photo was offered by an American book dealer along with a Suttree first edition inscribed to Barbara.

  1. Wow, McCarthy could have used a tailor in that second photo. Unless that was the style back then. Reminds me of the current debate of “do men know what ‘dressing to the right/left means in 2024’.”
