The Road (La Route), “Black and White” first limited edition.

First limited edition, only printing. Hardcover without a dustjacket as issued, 31 x 25 cm. Publisher’s gray thick cardboard covers, featuring two illustrations by Larcenet, differ from those of the first trade edition. Additionally, 16 pages on heavier paper, containing extra drawings, boards, or sketches, not included in the first trade edition, are present. The front cover is lettered in white, while the spine is black, lettered in black-on-black. A publisher’s sticker reading “Edition noire et Blanc / Tirage limité / Cahier graphique exclusif” is affixed to the shrink-wrap.

This limited edition was released simultaneously with the first trade edition. Larcenet used a variety of colored grays which makes the first trade edition album definitely colored. In order to emphasize the beauty of the drawings and the artist’s craft, Dargaud published this “Black and White” edition, in the same format but with a distinct cover design, presenting the artwork exclusively in black and white.
COLLECTING TOPICS: copies of the “Black & White” limited edition are uncommon. In July 2024, bookdealers listed a few copies priced between €200 and €250. However, a private sale in November 2024 saw an as new shrink-wrapped copy sell for $125.
